INVERKEITHING GARDEN COMPETITION
RESULTS 2023
The Inverkeithing Garden Compeition returned for yet another year and we were once again impressed by the exceptional standard and variety of each garden entered. We had a brand new category this year 'Pots & Patio Gardens' to add to the Main Garden Category and new trophies made by Tam Wiltshire - so who was going to win the Golden Trowel? The judges spent several days visiting the gardens and selecting the winners (MASSVE thanks to Bill Rennie, Myrna Venters, Debbie Walker, Tam Wiltshire and Shona Reppe who gave up their time). The prize-giving was held at the Masonic Hall as part of the Flower Show so without further ado....the results of the Inverkeithing Garden Compeition 2023 (in reverse order!) are as follows:
Pot/Patio Category
Highly Commended - Christine Davie
A sunny patio garden that is a secret haven for both humans and wildlife alike. Featuring a great variety of bug hotels and bird feeders and a huge collection of garden ornaments that compliment the plants and flowers - this patio garden is both welcoming and relaxing.
Third place - Brandon Trinidad
This pot garden was packed full of vegetables and fruit even though it is squeezed into the smallest space beside a track. A fantastic example of how you can be self sufficient with little to no space. We were so impressed with the produce grown and the inventive and resourceful use of pots and planting.
Second place - Irene McDonald
This magical garden is bursting with pots of flowers, shrubs and trees - and frog ornaments! The judges were impressed by how many plants were on display, the colours and thoughtful planting and in the words of the owner we agreed this was a ‘happy place’ and we didn’t want to leave!
First Place and the worthy winner of the GOLDEN TROWEL - John Kane
This pot garden has brightened everyones day for years. An explosion of colour (that requires sunglasses even on the greyest of days) with beautifully planted pots and a vast array of flowers, shrubs and small trees this garden proves that having no garden at all is not obstacle if the passion to create one is there. A joy to behold. A jewel in the crown of Inverkeithing. Back o yards would be a very dull place without it….

Open Garden Category
In reverse order:
Highly Commended - Stewart Duncan
A relatively new yet beautifully planted garden that shows MASSIVE potential, the judges were impressed with the creative range of plants, fruit trees and neat lawn combined with stylish wooden planters and attractive seating area. We are looking forward to seeing this garden in a years time when the plants are fully established. Definitely one to watch!
Highly Commended - Anna & Les Johns
This beautiful & expansive garden boasts an impressive range of vegetables and fruits and is a haven for wildlife and birds. With an orchard, a beehive and a pond big enough to launch a small dinghy it was obvious that the owners of this garden are dedication to wildlife and self sufficiency. To be commended.
The next 2 gardens kept the judges chatting and debating for too long in The Queens so in the end we decided to award them both third place.
3rd Place (joint) - Yvonne and Arthur
This large well established multi levelled garden has been beautifully and cleverly planted to frame the stunning views across the bay. With a great range of plants and neat well maintained hedging this attractive and colourful garden was so welcoming - the judges were sad to leave. We’ll bring a bottle next time.
3rd Place (joint) - Jennifer (Jeff) Cook
This beautiful garden is full of mature shrubs and trees and cleverly underplanted with herbs, hostas and bays. Cleverly positioned seating areas catch the sun at all times of the day and make this gorgeous garden a pleasure to visit.
2nd place - Samantha and Davide Cedermark Orsini
Their beautifully designed garden impressed the judges with its effortless mix of edible and ornamental plants, including rosemary, lavender, lettuce and sunflowers. A peaceful oasis, thoughtfully and cleverly planted and a delightful place to reflect and relax.
First Place and the Golden Trowel AND Garden Cup - Moira Marshall (and Kal the dog)
Featuring a wide variety of plants, mature trees and hedges as well as a greenhouse full of tomatoes this beautiful large and immaculate garden has been admired by everyone who walks past for years. A haven for wildlife with its rows and rows of fragrant purple lavender and logs rescued from the felled trees on Fraser Avenue it is a garden that not only reflects a care for wildlife but cares about the social history of Inverkeithing. It ticked all the boxes for the judges who unanimously agreed that the owner of this garden (and her dog) was a worthy winner.
